Sleeping Giant State Park

Hamden, Connecticut

Settled in 1638, Hamden was once part of New Haven. It separated and incorporated in 1786, but still retains strong ties to the larger city. It is a commercial extension of New Haven along Dixwell Avenue and an extension of New Haven's fine older homes along Whitney Avenue. Hamden is bordered by hills to its west and north. There are some old and new larger homes spaced throughout the town, but the housing consists mostly of single-family units. There are many apartment buildings and condominiums. Zoning ranges from city lot to larger acreage away from the center.

Most of the residents of Hamden formerly lived in New Haven. While many are still employed there, Hamden has a growing number of businesses and manufacturing plants of its own. It's location at the junction of the Wilbur Cross Parkway and State Route 10 brings it within easy reach of other neighboring communities.

A large and well-staffed school system serves the town's children. Eight elementary schools, two middle school and a high school combine to make the public education system. The basic education program is supplemented by special education, vocational education, and a program for gifted students. There is also adult evening education. Hamden also supports a complete parochial system as well as Hamden Hall, a private coed day school. Shopping can be done locally or in New Haven for all types of stores and commercial services. The health director implements mental health services and the public health nursing association is well organized and serves several towns in the region. Recreational activities take advantage of the beautiful natural setting in Hamden. There are several large recreational sites, play areas and playgrounds, including a large state park and forest. Facilities include tennis courts, basketball courts, ball fields, and many natural ice skating areas, making skating and hockey very popular. For the golf enthusiast, there are four golf courses in addition to the private country club.
